Supported Employment Fundamentals (Virtual April 2023)

This five-day, 35-hour training is organized into five modules. Each module includes several lessons, with a number of topics in each lesson. The training incorporates a combination of presentations, discussions, guest speakers, activities, exercises and field study.  Participants work individually as well as in small and large groups.

Learning Outcomes

Following completion of this training, you will have gained:

  • Enhanced understanding, knowledge and ability to support individuals who choose employment.
  • Increased expertise, confidence and knowledge about Supported Employment models, strategies, training approaches, and best practices.
  • Improved community, business and professional networking strategies.
  • Increased capacity to deliver successful Supported Employment.

The various stages of Supported Employment including transitions, employment and career planning, job development, marketing and job coaching will all be discussed and practiced in an interactive, hands-on method. Resources and tools will be shared and developed for your specific program needs.

Instructor

This training will be taught by both Nancy Gauvin and Annette Borrows.

Nancy Gauvin is the Associate Director of Employment Services with Chilliwack Society for Community Living. Nancy has been instrumental in helping job seekers find a place in the employment world, one person at a time. Nancy came to Chilliwack Society twenty-five years ago with business experience in retail and sales. She has utilized these skills to be the driving force to increase employment equality for people with developmental disabilities.

Over the past several years Nancy has been actively involved in the Rotary @ Work project promoting the business case for community employers resulting in additional paid employment positions.

In October 2016 Nancy received the Community Social Services Employers Association Award of Excellence – Hero Award and in May 2018 Nancy became a Graduate of the National Leadership Institute through the University of Delaware.

Annette Borrows has been serving people with disabilities towards employment for the past 23 years. Working together with WorkBC, Fraser Health, the Province (EPPD), CLBC and the Federal government has allowed Annette to gain knowledge in a variety of methods of supported employment, contracting processes and accreditation requirements. Annette’s teaching style is down to earth, filled with success stories, exercises that take you into the business community, practical tools to glean important information from the people you are serving and a realistic, successful approach to the world of employment counseling.
